Plugin Buying Guide
There are thousands of plugins out there. You can make professional music with under 1% of them. Even those are mostly optional. Chasing the next new one is a trap. Everything you need for this music comes from 7 companies.
Under each plugin our templates load, you'll find the stock Ableton Live Standard device to use instead.
DecapitatorLive: Saturator EchoBoyLive: Delay MicroShiftLive: Chorus‑Ensemble TremolatorLive: Auto Pan‑Tremolo Devil-Loc DeluxeLive: Compressor SpaceBlenderLive: Reverb
Each one is modelled on real hardware. Decapitator's 5 drives come from an Ampex tape preamp, an EMI console, a Neve and both sides of a Culture Vulture. Live's Saturator gives you generic curves.
EchoBoy puts the wow and flutter of a Space Echo or a Memory Man on your repeats. Live's Delay is clean. Nothing in Live does MicroShift's H3000 widening.
Wait for Black Friday and buy Soundtoys 5. The whole bundle costs less than these 6 on their own.
Black Friday, or about half price in the spring and summer sales. No subscription. 30-day trials.
1176Live: Compressor LA-2ALive: Compressor Pultec EQLive: EQ Eight Studer A800Live: Saturator API 2500Live: Glue Compressor EMT 140 PlateLive: Reverb Massive PassiveLive: EQ Eight Paradise GuitarLive: Amp and Cabinet, in Suite EMT 250Live: Reverb Lexicon 224Live: Reverb Hitsville ChambersLive: Reverb Studio DLive: Chorus‑Ensemble Brigade ChorusLive: Chorus‑Ensemble
These model the hardware the records were made on. They go right down to the transformers and tubes. The LA-2A's optical cell sets its own release. The Pultec lets you boost and cut the same low frequency at once. Live's Compressor and EQ Eight are clean and model none of it.
They run on your own computer with no UA hardware. Softube covers a lot of the same ground. It comes down to which ecosystem you've already bought into.
Get the 1176, LA-2A and Pultec in Native Classics for $49. Pick the rest in Mix Tape Pro for $99 and catch Paradise on sale for $99.
Something's on sale every month, and the older plugins sit at $29 to $49. Or rent all 13 in UAD Spark Studio for $19.99 a month.
VintageVerbLive: Reverb SupermassiveFree ShimmerLive: Hybrid Reverb, in Suite DelayLive: Delay RoomLive: Reverb
VintageVerb is one of the most respected reverbs around. At $50, it's hard to beat on value. Its 22 modes recreate the digital halls, plates and chambers on 1970s and 1980s records. The colour switch picks the decade. Go dark and noisy, go brighter, or keep it clean.
Room, Delay and Shimmer cost the same. Supermassive and every update cost nothing. Shimmer pitches the reverb's feedback up an octave so the tail climbs as it fades. Nothing in Live Standard does that.
Supermassive is free. The other 4 cost $50 each on any day of the year.
Never on sale. No subscription. Every update free.
Kontakt 8Live: Guitar and Bass pack
Both guitars come from the Session Guitarist line. Electric Vintage plays rhythm on a late 1950s Telecaster. Electric Mint plays lead on a 1960 Stratocaster.
Each one holds more than 200 strummed and picked patterns that a session guitarist played. Switch to melody mode for slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs and vibrato. Live's Guitar and Bass pack has neither.
Buy both at half price in the Cyber sale. Run them in the free Kontakt Player and skip Kontakt 8.
The Cyber sale, mid-November to the end of December, at $49.50 each. June's sale takes about 30% off.
Analog Lab ProLive: Drift and Analog V Collection IntroFor the presets Tape MELLO-FILive: Saturator
The keyboards in these genres are vintage. Junos and Prophets, a Mellotron, a Farfisa. Analog Lab models exactly those, so a Juno pad has the Juno's filter, drift and chorus. Pigments and Serum are built for sound design, and neither is a Juno. Live's Drift and Analog get close. Arturia's dial these sounds in that much quicker.
Tape MELLO-FI adds wow, flutter, worn tape and hiss at once.
Pay $82.50 for Analog Lab Pro, $99.50 for the instruments in V Collection Intro and $24.40 for MELLO-FI. Get the sound packs at half price and the Reverb Machine packs for $60.
Half price in the February and July sales, and Analog Lab Pro halves at Black Friday. Or rent to own on Splice at $9.99 a month each, yours after 20 payments.
Pro-L 2Live: Limiter Saturn 2Live: Saturator
Pro-L 2 oversamples up to 32x and meters your loudness for streaming. Live's Limiter does neither. With Saturn 2 you split a sound into as many as 6 frequency ranges and drive each one its own way. Live's Saturator drives the whole sound the same way.
Pro-Q 4 is FabFilter's most famous plugin, but you don't need it. The sets use Live's EQ Eight. That's plenty when a mix is built clean instead of rescued.
Buy both at Black Friday's 25% off. Or buy one, then get the other on your account's discount for about $240 in all.
25% off once a year, at Black Friday. No subscription. 30-day trials.
EZbassLive: Guitar and Bass pack EZdrummer 3Live: Session Drums Studio pack
EZdrummer 3 and EZbass sound like a record the moment they load. EZdrummer's kits were recorded at Hansa in Berlin and arrive mixed, close, overhead and room mics and all, and Dream Pop EZX is a kit made for this music. EZbass's expansions are the basses of each era, a violin bass, a Wal, a flatwound P-Bass, and every one slides, hammers on, ghosts and mutes. Our bass parts use all of it.
Superior Drummer 3 is more realistic, and overkill for these genres. Skip Toontrack's MIDI packs too. Fala writes every part's MIDI itself, played with a musician's feel.
Wait for Black Friday and get EZdrummer 3 at $129 and EZbass at $99. Add the EZX and EBX Value Packs and catch the last 2 EBX on sale.
Black Friday, mid-November to 1 December. Any 3 EZX or 3 EBX are $179 any day. 10-day trials.
